The Auditory Kuleshov Effect: Multisensory Integration in Movie Editing

2016

Almost a hundred years ago, the Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov conducted his now famous editing experiment in which different objects were added to a given film scene featuring a neutral face. It is said that the audience interpreted the unchanged facial expression as a function of the added object (e.g., an added soup made the face express hunger). This interaction effect has been dubbed “Kuleshov effect.” In the current study, we explored the role of sound in the evaluation of facial expressions in films. Thirty participants watched different clips of faces that were intercut with neutral scenes, featuring either happy music, sad music, or no music at all. This was crossed with the facia…

The Perpetrator's mise-en-scene: Language, Body, and Memory in the Cambodian Genocide

2018

Rithy Panh's film S-21. The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (2003) was the result of a three-year shooting period in the Khmer Rouge centre of torture where perpetrators and victims exchanged experiences and re-enacted scenes from the past under the gaze of the filmmaker's camera. Yet, a crucial testimony was missing in that puzzle: the voice of the prison's director, Kaing Guek Eav, comrade Duch. When the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) were finally established in Phnom Penh to judge the master criminals of Democratic Kampuchea, the first to be indicted was this desk criminal. The film Duch, Master of the Forges of Hell (R. Panh, 2011) deploys a new confrontation – an a…

Hegemonic representations of the past and digital agency: Giving meaning to “The Soviet Story” on social networking sites

2015

In 2008, Edvīns Šnore, the Latvian film director, released a shocking and provocative documentary, “The Soviet Story,” which explored some terrible episodes from the Soviet past as well as the collaboration between the Soviet and Nazi regimes. Scholars have argued that The Soviet Story is an effective Latvian response to Russian propaganda, but it also exemplifies the broader problems of post-communist memory politics. This article takes a step further in the discussion of The Soviet Story. It focuses on the idea of how memory work triggered by the documentary got started on social networking sites. In particular, the article deals with the video-sharing website YouTube and the Internet en…

2016

We are well aware that, no matter how valuable a text may be, its afterlife in other cultural and linguistic contexts is heavily dependent on the translator’s ability to meet the needs and expectations of its target audience. This is precisely what French screenwriter Jules Romains and film director Maurice Tourneur did when adapting Jonson’s Volpone [1940] for the new medium at the advent of sound films. It is the aim of this article to cast light on their creative transposition of Ben Jonson’s theatrical masterpiece. Keywords : Romains; Tourneur; Volpone ; creative transposition

Teaching Argumentation Theory and Practice: The Case of 12 Angry Men

2011

The aim of this contribution is to illustrate how the pragmadialectical model of critical discussion may be explained and studied with the jurors' deliberations in the film 12 Angry Men. The film itself may be understood as an argument by example, and to defend this idea we take into consideration the thesis that the filmmaker wants to establish, the constraints of the medium, and the three classical perspectives on argumentation.

2016

ABSTRACT In 1964, Glauber Rocha directed the film Black God, White Devil year when Brazil suffered a military coup state. Due to strong censorship at the time, the dialogue about political or social issues was forbidden. Despite all that chaos, Glauber Rocha wrote and directed Black God, White Devil and Antonio das Mortes that deal with the dichotomy between good / evil, educated / uneducated, order / disorder, the social, the symbolic constructions of space as semiosphere, borders and their breaks causing chaos. For the director, religion is closely related to politics. The desire for power is enshrined in relations: political and social (interest of the owners on the workers) and religiou…
